They made their way back down the cliff and across the beach, then swam out around the rocks to the sandbar. The tide was on the way out, exposing some of the sand, so they sat there for a few minutes to rest before continuing back to the main beach. By the time they arrived, Edmund and Utah were there, setting up a gaily-colored beach shelter. Utah, whose skin was deeply tanned, sat in the doorway, blocking the exit, keeping the baby safely in the shelter, where Mavis, whose skin was as fair as her brother’s, and Edmund stayed in the shade.

Drew, Kristien, and AJ dropped onto their towels, which the others had piled beside the shelter, and AJ showed them all the stones she’d found.

“I climbed the cliff to the area that was calling me and found a cave as I’d expected. Inside was a stalagmite, and behind that, a cavity. These three rocks were in the hole.”

Mavis ran a finger over the stones. “Since you sent Edmund and Utah to fetch my aquamarine, I’ve believed implicitly in the power of stones. Each stone is the color of a person’s eyes. The onyx is you, the emerald is Drew, and the amber is Kristien. I understand that. But there’s more than that, isn’t there?”

“Emeralds give energy and promote emotional and spiritual balance. I’m guessing the emerald is the driver that holds the three of you together. So Drew is the center of your triad. Am I right?” asked Edmund.

“Not quite. Emeralds are also the protection stone. I think Drew is the instigator, the key that brought us together. But now that we are together, our job is to protect AJ. Her psychic powers will increase, and from time to time, she’ll be in danger. The two of us are called to protect her,” explained Kristien.

“I knew your powers would increase. You’re enormously talented. But I don’t like that you’ll be in danger,” said Mavis.

“We’ll look after her,” said Drew confidently.
